Teach A Craft
Do you knit or crochet? Can you make wire-wrap jewelry? Do you build birdhouses? Are you a painter? Well, you don’t need to have a degree in education to be a teacher. Pick a project that you can teach in an hour or two. Provide the materials to your students. Walk them through the steps. At the end of the class they get to go home with something they learned how to make
Are you teaching kids? Make it a smaller project that takes no longer than an hour. Stop halfway through for a snack and juice break so you don’t lose their attention.
Want to get a little fancier? Market your class as a “girls’ night out” or a “couples class”. Pick a slightly longer project, something about two to three hours. Provide a little wine and appetizers. You just created a great option for girls’ night or a date, and can easily charge more for the experience. A couple glasses of wine, light food and project materials for an all-inclusive night out? Depending on where you live you could easily charge $75 a person and up!
Do you love working in the garden? Is your garden the envy of the neighborhood? Why not put that to use and make some cash doing what you love? I’m not talking a big commitment, full service landscaping business. Just gardens.
Take a look at your customer’s garden space, tell them what you think would look nice and how much it will cost, get the okay, and plant a garden. You already know about what you’ll have to spend on your pansies and marigolds and rose bushes, because you put them in your own garden. Add on what you want to earn for your time, and have fun.
Be prepared for lots of referral work. People love a colorful garden, but not everyone (myself included) can create one. One happy customer could easily lead to calls from all over town!
Sell Your Vacation Photos
Yeah, you can make money from your vacation photos. Create a photo book and sell it on Etsy. Make a calendar. Sell the pictures to postcard companies. Sell them as stock photos on sites like iStockphoto or Shutterstock. There is decent money to be made if you are an avid photographer. Take a look around the internet. See all the photos on websites? Look closer, and I bet you’ll see a lot of photos used on multiple sites. That’s because some photos are completely free to use, and everyone uses them. Well, some site owners like original photos, and will pay a premium for exclusive rights. That’s where sites like iStockphoto and Shutterstock come in. You put your photos up, list a price, and they handle the rest.
And you can do this with more than just vacation photos. Did you go on an adventure trip and take photos? Snap a few shots of the cute woodland creatures around your home or neighborhood park? Catch that sunset at just the right time? If it’s a quality picture, someone will likely be interested in it. Will you make a fortune selling stock photos? Probably not. But if you are an avid photographer with an eye for a captivating shot you could make a nice little side income.
Package And Sell “DIY” Kits
You’ve certainly seen model car kits in stores. Maybe you’ve been to a hobby or craft store and seen kits for cross-stitch projects, or bird houses, or paint-by-numbers. What do these all have in common? Everything you need to complete the project is included in the kit. You could do the same thing with any craft you enjoy.
Woodworkers can pick a small project, cut the pieces, draw up simple assembly instructions, add a little bag of nails, and package it all up.
Jewelry makers can package beads, wire, string, clasps, and findings with instructions to make a ring, bracelet, or necklace.
You get the idea, right? Add a picture of what the finished project looks like and you’ve just created a great product for someone to give as a gift. Once you figure out exactly what will need to go into each kit, you could easily put together 5, or 10, or 30! in a single sitting. Sell them at local fairs or flea markets, or even on sites like Etsy.
Setup Pet Habitats
No, I don’t mean get a job at the zoo! Think smaller, like pet lizards or hamsters. If you’ve got experience with small pets and setting up their enclosures, you’ve got knowledge that other people could use. When the little boy down the street begs his parents for a pet rat, or the little girl next door desperately wants a pet turtle, Mom and Dad may have no idea what they’re getting themselves into.
You could help with that. If you know how to build a habitat that will keep those pets happy and healthy you can help make little Jimmy or Jenny’s dream come true. Offer to pick up the cage or tank, along with the environmental accessories, and set it all up for them. You might even be able to get repeat work out of it if you provide maintenance and occasional updates so the pet stays healthy and doesn’t get bored.
There you go, five simple ways you can use your hobbies to earn extra money at home.
