I remember days that I would sit and wonder, “How can I make money at home?” It sounded like a really nice idea. Make money sitting on my couch in my pajamas doing something I actually enjoy? Heck yeah! Where do I sign up?
The more I thought about it, the more it sounded like an impossible dream.
Have you ever had that problem? Ever wanted to do something so badly that you thought about it too much and talked yourself out of it? Or spent so much time thinking about what could go wrong that it started to sound like a bad idea? Maybe you’re still thinking about it, weighing the pros and cons?
Welcome to analysis paralysis!
Yes, that’s a real thing.
Analysis paralysis is the term for not taking action because you get stuck in a loop of analyzing the situation.
Don’t get me wrong! Analysis is good. You don’t want to jump into something without giving it a little consideration.
For example, you wouldn’t jump off a diving board without making sure there was water in the pool!
That’s a perfect analysis. Diving board, water, safe. Diving board, no water, broken neck!
Analysis paralysis is what happens when you get on the diving board and start thinking about the color of the water. Then the temperature. And who might be watching. Or if someone will put the dive on YouTube. Or if the pool will still be there next year. Or…
Diving board, water, safe. Diving board, no water, broken neck. That’s all the information you need!
And it’s very similar to deciding to make money at home.
There are only two questions you really need to ask yourself to be prepared to make money from home:
- Can it work?
- Can it fail?
And interestingly enough, the answer to both questions is the same: Yes.
How can these two questions be all you need to be prepared? Because knowing that success and failure are both possibilities you can determine how to go about starting.
When you know that it’s possible succeed, you know that it’s worth trying. Whatever kind of work you plan on doing from home can make money. Don’t worry about how much. Or how quickly. Or how steadily. Or anything else! All you need to know to start is this: Yes, it can make you money.
When you also realize that there is a chance of failure, you know to start cautiously. Don’t worry about how badly you might fail. Or about losing your house. Or losing everything. It won’t happen if you keep in mind that your money making venture might fail.
Don’t worry about losing the house!? I must be out of my mind, right?
Not in the least.
You really do only need to know that you might succeed, or that you might fail.
With those two simple pieces of information you’ve got what you need to set out, and to be smart about it.
You might succeed, so start. But you also might fail, so keep your current job and start slowly.
If you start your own business while you are still working a steady job there’s no risk of losing anything. You’ve still got the income you’re used to, so there’s no pressure to make your new business a hit success overnight.
When you realize that it’s okay to start slowly, because you’ve got your current job to carry you through, you can break the endless cycle of analysis paralysis and actually DO something.
So go ahead. Start your business. Just don’t dump everything into it on day one.
Start slow, and as you build it up start analyzing all those other things that kept you from getting started in the first place, like how much you can earn and how fast. Because there’s no way to answer those questions until you START.
Can you make money at home? Yes.
Could you fail? Yes.
We know that both are possibilities, so we know to be smart and not dive in headfirst and put everything we have into our new venture.
But we do need to start.
And the first step to getting started is deciding how we want to make money from home.
The first question we need to ask is whether we want to actually make our money at home, or just be based at home.
There are plenty of home based businesses that are easy to start on a small scale and grow with time.

Or do you actually want to do the work at your house?

As you may have guessed, there are a lot of ways to earn money at home.
With all of the options covered in these articles, and the countless other ideas out there, the question isn’t really so much how can you make money at home. The better question is how do you want to make money at home?
Choosing Your Direction
So how do you choose from all of these options without falling back into the trap of analysis paralysis?
Have you ever heard the saying “Do what you love, and love what you do”?
It’s great advice, especially when it comes to making money on the side or starting a business of your own. When you do what you love, work doesn’t seem so much like work.
That’s probably why you’re reading an article about making money from home in the first place. If you don’t like your job, the thought that takes center stage is “How do I get out of here?”
It wouldn’t make any sense to start working for yourself only to realize you hate what you’re doing and want to quit.
So think of things that you love, and then figure out how to make money from them.
Crafts can be made and sold. You can sell them at fairs or on the internet. You can teach classes about the craft you love. You can put together kits to make a craft project and sell the kit. Write a blog and give instructions on different projects and advertise the materials and tools you use to make them.
If you like hiking, rafting, or kayaking and live in or near a tourist destination, advertise yourself as an adventure guide and take tourists out on hikes and rafting adventures. Write a blog about your favorite hiking or kayaking destinations, and advertise the gear and equipment you take along.
Don’t mind getting your hands dirty? If you like construction, or yard care, or take pride in cleaning, start a business around that. Build sheds and decks to get started. Mow a couple yards every weekend until your name gets out there. Start out cleaning a couple houses, then work your way up to commercial janitorial services.
Any of these ideas, and many more, have the potential to be profitable full-time businesses, or just a little extra money on the side. That’s the great thing about working for yourself: You get to decide how successful you are based on the effort you put in.
How Can I Make Money At Home?
Just about any way you want!
I’ve run my own construction business and did pretty well I liked what I did, and enjoyed going to work every day.
I have also taught craft project to children and adults. It was a lot of fun. The kids got really excited about making something and being able to take it home. I turned some of the adult classes into date night type events, so couples could come, have a little wine and light food, and learn how to make something together.
Now I focus most of my energies into online businesses (You’re reading one of them right now!). I am blogging for a living and doing quite well.
I have this site about personal finances and making money. I have several others as well. One is a beginners’ fitness advice site. Another is dedicated to fun and entertaining gift ideas. These are just a couple.
What do they all have in common?
Every website I build and turn into a business is focused on something I am passionate about. So I get to write about my passions, help people, and make a living all at the same time. It’s incredible!
