So you want to earn extra cash at home, but don’t want to build an entire business? Don’t think it’s possible? Well, you really can work from home, at home, without the commitment of a “business”. There are plenty of ways to make a little extra on the side when you need to without leaving home.
- Pet Grooming
- Auto Repair
- Clothing Alterations
- Event Planning
- Photo Studio
Do you like kids? Are you usually home on Friday or Saturday nights? Pick a couple Fridays or Saturdays every month to provide babysitting for parents who want to get out and have a date night without the kids. Watch the kids from 6 PM to midnight. Or may 9 PM to 3 AM. Go for full overnights and charge a premium. Whatever times work for you to make a date night possible for those parents could prove quite profitable. An ad in the local paper or a flier hung at grocery stores and gas stations could easily let people know about your services, and you could decide how many kids you wanted to watch and how often to make the extra money you need every month.
How much do you like dogs? Are you patient enough to deal with a puppy who is still training to go to the bathroom outside? A lot of dog owners don’t like leaving their dogs home alone all day. Especially puppies still potty training! Put up an ad or flier, find a couple dogs to watch during the day, and make a little extra money. This is a great option because you can easily watch a couple dogs in your home while still getting your daily housework done. Just the occasional interruption when Fido needs to go out and pee.
Doggy bath. Dog and cat claw trimming. Puppy haircuts. If you’re good with animals and don’t mind work that can get a little messy, this could be a great option. Put in your ad or flier that you are available every Tuesday and Saturday between noon and 5 PM. These are obviously just random days and times. You can pick your own when you decide how often you want to work. Just be ready for the phone to ring 7 days a week with people calling to schedule an appointment.
I talked about this in Home Based Business Ideas With Low Startup Costs. In that article I discuss it as a full-time business out of the home. But it could easily be scaled down. Choose just a couple of services that you will offer, like oil changes, A/C recharge, and brake pad replacement. If you can do these jobs quickly and get through two or three a day just two days a week, you could make a nice side income in just a few hours a week.
Some students struggle in school, and their parents may not be able to help. Maybe you could. Are you a math whiz? Can you help someone learn English as a second language? Do you have strong writing skills? Put up an ad or flier and let people know what you can help their kids with. You could even get in touch with the school, give them a stack of business cards, and ask them to suggest you to the parents of any students struggling in your area of expertise. Make extra money and help a kid do better in school? That’s a win-win situation if I’ve ever seen one!
Are you handy with a needle and thread? How about a sewing machine? Set up a little alteration shop. Hemming pant legs. Taking in dresses. Letting out suit jackets. Accept as many or as few jobs as you want at any given time. Tell your customers their item will be ready that evening, or the next day, or three days later. Whatever time frame works for you so your side job doesn’t take over your life. Note in your ad or flier that alterations could take up to 3 days (or whatever time frame works for you), then no one will show up expecting it an hour later!
Are you a good coordinator? Can you see all the pieces that go into a good gathering and make them fit together? Can you keep track of details from multiple sources? Event planning could be something worth looking into. Birthday parties. Graduation parties. Bachelor/Bachelorette parties. Weddings. If you can spend time on the phone booking the venue, caterer, entertainment, and anything else your client wants, you could make a nice living. Keep it small and only plan one event a month so it doesn’t get overwhelming. Who knows, you may decide you love it and go full-time. Some event planners even have their own supply of chairs, tables, tents, decorations, and all the other making of a great event so they can make even more money on top of their planning income by renting their own product instead of using an outside vendor.
Are you a talented photographer? Can you capture a nice portrait? Do you have a room in your house or space in your garage where you could set up lighting and backdrops? Open up your own photo studio and pick a couple days a week to take portraits. Without the overhead of renting or purchasing retail space to run your studio out of you could easily beat studio prices. If you can afford the investment of a large format photo printer you could even save money on photo prints. That would allow you to pass those savings on to your customers in the form of lower fees, or you could make a little extra by charging the same for prints as other studios.
These are just a few ideas to work from home, at home. There are tons of others. Honestly, your imagination is the only limit on how you could make money from home.

Yes! Even babysitting and pet grooming. How? By offering advice on things to do while babysitting to keep the kids entertained. Teaching people the proper way to groom their pet and the tools they’ll need. You won’t actually babysit online, or groom a pet through the computer, but educating people is a wonderful foundation for an online business.
